Reading And Writing
Education May 21st, 2008Development of the ability of reading is easy compared to writing for children. The process of reading is assisted by a natural gift of learning by rote which they have.
A child is required to learn alphabet before learning words. Learning words is a bit difficult for spellings of many words in English are different from being phonetic. After acquiring a reasonable vocabulary they can start reading. Learning to read may grow slowly word by word but soon gathers momentum.
Learning to write is not that easy. There are many more stages involved in acquiring the ability to write. We are not discussing the ability to write properly, but just of writing. The first thing the child should learn is to control the movement of his fingers. So far he did not face this problem. Leave alone fingers, he is not used to care about the movement of his hand. Now asking him not to scribble in whatever way he likes, but write in prescribed form only, requires a lot of efforts on his part.
Generally lined copybooks with dotted letters are there to help him, but he doesn’t find them easy. The problem, usual at his age, is hand-fingers-eye coordination and keeping eyes and mind concentrated at tip of the pencil. These are just teething problems and she will sure get over them. The teacher at school and mother at home should help and encourage her.
